Korea National Opera's Ring Cycle Opens at Seoul Arts Center, With Three More Operas to Come by 2029

Korea National Opera's "Das Rheingold" closes Sunday at Seoul Arts Center's Opera Theater, opening a four-year, in-house staging of Wagner's full Ring cycle through 2029.

Korea National Opera closes the opening chapter of its four-year Ring cycle on Sunday, the final afternoon of "Das Rheingold" at the Seoul Arts Center's Opera Theater, 2406 Nambusunhwan-ro, Seocho-gu, Seoul. The run began Oct. 29 and plays through Nov. 1, conducted by Lothar Koenigs and directed by Lorenzo Fioroni, with Junyoung Kim as assistant conductor. Tickets and seat maps are listed on the Korea National Opera's booking page at nationalopera.org, checked Nov. 1, with box office sales also handled through the Seoul Arts Center on site.

Korea National Opera is billing this as the first time a Korean company has produced all four Ring operas as its own staging, start to finish, by 2029. That claim is specific. Korea has hosted the Ring before, just not one built entirely in-house by a domestic company.

In November 2018, a company called World Art Opera staged "Das Rheingold" in Seoul under conductor Matthias Fletzberger and director Achim Freyer, with the Prime Philharmonic Orchestra and a mostly Korean cast. Fletzberger described it at the time as the first Ring opera performed in Korea. That production did not go on to complete the full cycle.

Touring companies have brought finished cycles to Korean stages too. The Mariinsky Theatre performed a complete Ring in Seoul in 2005, and the National Theatre Mannheim presented a full cycle at the Daegu International Opera Festival in 2022, both imported productions rather than Korean ones. This August, Korean soloists joined the Bucheon Philharmonic for a condensed, roughly four-hour concert version of the whole cycle in Seoul and Bucheon, timed to the 150th anniversary of the Ring's first complete performance at Bayreuth in 1876.

The Rheingold cast splits the role of Alberich between Samuel Youn and Yang Jun-mo. Youn has sung in the Cologne Opera ensemble since 1999 and became a fixture at the Bayreuth Festival after a sudden 2012 debut as the Flying Dutchman, stepping in when Yevgeny Nikitin withdrew days before opening over a swastika tattoo. Youn has since performed the Dutchman close to 150 times and recorded Rheingold with the Hallé orchestra. Freia alternates between Daniela Köhler and Lim Sae-kyung, a casting pattern that mixes international and Korean singers across the principal roles.

Company director Park Hye-jin has described the cycle, in comments to OperaWire, as a production meant to carry what she calls a Korean character, a concept that will become easier to judge once the remaining three operas reach the stage. The Ring sits inside a 2026 season that otherwise leans French and Italian, opening in April with Massenet's "Werther" under conductor Hong Seok-won and closing in December with Verdi's "Don Carlos," directed by Yannis Kokos and conducted by Valerio Galli.

Korea National Opera has not yet announced dates for "Die Walkure," "Siegfried" or "Gotterdammerung," the three installments due by 2029. For now, the only confirmed booking window is the one closing Sunday at the Opera Theater, where Youn's Alberich shares the stage with a production team staging the first scene of a story Wagner spent 26 years writing.
